  • Botanical Name: Swertia chirayita.
  • Origin: Native to the Himalayan region of India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
  • Appearance: An erect, annual plant, about 0.5 to 1.5 meters high, with a long, erect stem and opposite, lanceolate leaves. It has numerous small, yellowish-green flowers with purple or greenish-white hair.
  • Taste: Known for its extremely bitter taste, attributed to compounds like amarogentin, swertiamarin, and swerchirin.
  • Parts Used: The whole plant, particularly the dried stems, leaves, and twigs, are used for medicinal purposes.
